Lab-grown diamonds

How they are formed and what distinguishes them from natural diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds created in a laboratory and are chemically and optically identical to natural diamonds. At Fischer, we offer both types of diamonds in our configurator, whether you’re looking for a wedding band, a solitaire, or a memory ring. Depending on your preference, you can easily choose between natural and lab-grown diamonds.

What distinguishes lab-grown diamonds from natural diamonds?

Laboratory-grown diamonds and natural diamonds are chemically, optically, and physically identical and differ only slightly in their material properties. Furthermore, because they are produced under controlled conditions in a laboratory, laboratory-grown diamonds can be guaranteed to be of consistently high quality.

Lab-grown diamonds

Laboratory-grown diamonds are produced under conditions that mimic the natural formation process. Production takes place under controlled conditions in a laboratory, which ensures consistent quality. While there is no direct impact on nature, the energy required for production is comparatively high.

Natural Diamonds

Natural diamonds form over millions to billions of years in the Earth's mantle under high pressure and high temperatures in the presence of carbon. To obtain them, they must be extracted from the Earth through a complex mining process.

Lab-grown diamonds

Because of the relatively fast and controlled manufacturing process, lab-grown diamonds are generally much less expensive than natural diamonds.

Natural Diamonds

Natural diamonds are generally more expensive than lab-grown diamonds. However, because of their natural origin and the complex process by which they are formed, they are considered particularly valuable and hold greater sentimental value for many people.

How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Made?

Laboratory-grown diamonds are created by using a small diamond seed as a starting point. Pure carbon is deposited onto this seed, building up layer by layer under controlled conditions. In this way, the diamond gradually grows until it reaches the desired size.

Throughout the entire process, pressure, temperature, and purity are closely monitored to ensure consistently high quality. After growth, the diamond is cut and polished, just like a natural diamond.

Laboratory-grown diamond

Lab-grown diamonds are identical to natural diamonds in terms of their chemical composition and material properties.
They are grown in a laboratory rather than mined, which makes them more sustainable in some respects, ensures consistently high quality through controlled conditions, and also makes them particularly attractive in terms of price.

Natural Diamond

Natural diamonds are formed over millions of years deep within the Earth, an origin that gives them special emotional significance for many people. Our natural diamonds come exclusively from conflict-free sources and are certified by the Kimberley Process, among other standards.
